Asian Culture ~ From Closed Off, To My Entire World

You know when you dream, and you have lots of ‘extras’ around you going about their lives in said dream? Well mine are all Asian.

The only exposure to Asian cultures were TV, movies, and the British adapted Chinese food at all you can eat buffets (which I liked haha.)

Other than that, that entire side of the planet I didn’t know much about it. I didn’t have any Asian friends either. When I went to University, there were thousands of International students from all over Asia but they never mingled with anyone but themselves.

A wall was there and I couldn’t peep over it to see for myself what it is like. It seemed like the most distant and furthest removed from my own culture simply because it was the cultures I knew the least about.

Fast forward to about 8 months before writing this post. I had always wanted to go to Thailand. Instagram, with everyone posting pretty pictures of far away worlds sparked my desire to go and to travel in general. After that trip to Thailand I soon started a job teaching English to Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese people.

Add to this, one of my housemates loves Anime and we recently began watching some of the Anime films and shows on Netflix. And naturally I seemed to then gravitate to Asian cuisine as I thoroughly enjoyed Thai food and was exposed to Asian foods through my work and now media consumption.

Due to my minimalism I have also bought into the Japanese house styles like low to the floor beds and dining tables and minimal decor.

I’ve gone from no real exposure to Asian culture becoming a huge part of my every day life and I wouldn’t change it for the world! Even adverts on the internet aimed at me are Asian…

I am absolutely fascinated by all the different Asian cultures and I can’t wait to explore them!
